New Trampoline? Take safety measures before bouncing

Your kids were really good this year. They brought home report cards with great grades. There were no calls from the principal or incidents that ended in a grounding. All year long they begged you to get them a trampoline. They want one really bad and promise the money will be worth it.

Now that summer is here, you want your children to be active. You have been secretly saving money to get them that trampoline they want so desperately. You think it will be a great way to burn off energy. The trampoline will encourage them to exercise and be out in the fresh air. While you plan on getting it for them, you know you will need to establish some rules.

Rules that all kids should follow

Before you set up the trampoline and let the kids have their fun, go over safety precautions. Write out the rules you have for them. Also, don’t forget to speak with them about letting their friends jump.

  • Don’t let anyone under 5 jump
  • No flipping or tumbling allowed
  • Do not jump off of the trampoline
  • No double bouncing
  • Jump one person at a time or watch weight distribution
  • Do not jump alone or without supervision

Preparation parents can take

There are steps that you should take as well. You will want to ensure that the trampoline is set up correctly and that your insurance is ready.

  • Set up the trampoline on level ground, away from trees and fences
  • Check the padding and springs
  • Use safety pads and nets
  • Draft a permission slip that parents must sign before their children use the trampoline
  • Check with your insurance provider to see if they handle claims

Trampolines can cause serious injuries. Many injuries are to the back and neck. It is imperative that you take measures to keep things as safe as possible. You will want to triple check your insurance policy. Ask questions. Know what to do if your children get hurt, and also what to do if their friends get hurt. It is better to be over-prepared. Hopefully with all of your safety measures and rules, the kids will all have a safe, fun summer with their new trampoline.
